Our mission  for the day was to wheel south toward a much discussed snake temple.<\/p>\n<p>It was, rumor told, filled with pit vipers that had come to the temple of  their own accord (tired of the monotony of life in the jungle perhaps),  where they were promptly sedated by a Chinese monk by the name of Chor  Soo  Kong, using a special blend of incense rumored to turn the deadly  poisonous vipers into docile wall ornaments. \u00a0We pictured a darkened room billowing with clouds of\u00a0fragrant\u00a0and intoxicating smoke. \u00a0On the cold, clay ground, we envisioned gigantic pit vipers, their bodies arching and slowly writhing as if entranced by the burning herbs. \u00a0Get too close, we thought, and they may spit\u00a0poison\u00a0into our eyes and strike with\u00a0vicious\u00a0fury. \u00a0Sounded like the kind of  place that might make a good waypoint, so off we went, wheeling hard  southward.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1719\" title=\"Sunny Phoon\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/P20938841.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" srcset=\"https:\/\/asiawheeling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/P20938841.jpg 700w, https:\/\/asiawheeling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/P20938841-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We made our way down the coast, where we were soon  able to leave the highway, and ride on a delightful wooded side-path,  which snaked in between the highway and the straits of Malacca.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1721\" title=\"Wheeling South on Penang Island\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/P2103941.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/asiawheeling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/P2103941.jpg 700w, https:\/\/asiawheeling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/P2103941-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Our ride  took us past a number of strange settlements and construction projects.  When the hunger hit, we found ourselves outside a rather posh  looking mall in a suburban district, and made our way inside to find  sustenance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/P2103961.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1723\" title=\"Chinese New Year Mall\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/P2103961.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/asiawheeling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/P2103961.jpg 700w, https:\/\/asiawheeling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/P2103961-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We wandered the mall, looking for food, and spending  quite a bit of time in a dried snacks shop, where I had the great  misfortune of sampling a salted prune that rang throughout my mouth  with a most vile flavor that refused dilution no matter how much  water I drank.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/P2103971.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1725\" title=\"Old Town White Coffee\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/P2103971.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/asiawheeling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/P2103971.jpg 700w, https:\/\/asiawheeling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/P2103971-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>An overpriced, but thankfully large meal of  chicken and rice, and a cup of Joe at the local <a title=\"Old Town White Coffee\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Old_Town_White_Coffee\" rel=\"noopener\">Old Town White Coffee<\/a> shop later, we were back on the cycles with renewed energy on our  mission for the snake temple.<\/p>\n<p>We stopped at a large Chinese  temple, which proved not to contain any snakes. Rather, we found an old  man inside who directed us in half-words of English toward the water.  He assured us that our destination was &#8220;na fa.&#8221; And though we were almost  certain that we had completely failed in communicating anything to him  about the snake temple, we decided it would not hurt to follow his  vehement gesticulations in the direction of the sea.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/P2103979.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1726\" title=\"Down to Water\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/P2103979.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/asiawheeling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/P2103979.jpg 700w, https:\/\/asiawheeling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/P2103979-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left\">We were  glad we did, since, though there was no snake temple to be found, there  was a large fishing dock, where men unloaded piles of glistening fish  and a fellow was operating a strange garbage transport vehicle, which  emitted plumes of blue smoke as it grunted up 45 degree inclines.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><iframe class=\"aw-video\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Travel video\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/cNr39KR4Pck\" allow=\"fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Back  on the road, we decided to dart into the interior of the island, away  from the sea in search of the temple.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/P2103984.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1727\" title=\"Drinking Sasbarilla\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/P2103984.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/asiawheeling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/P2103984.jpg 700w, https:\/\/asiawheeling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/P2103984-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Again and again, we would stop to  buy water from a merchant of some kind, or at the very least, sweet soda served in a plastic bag. \u00a0It was quite hot, and we were  sweating hard. \u00a0He or she would direct us very clearly toward  somewhere in the midst of this vast industrial park. But each time, we  were unsuccessful. We did enjoy a fine tour of the airport, and the  local Penang free  trade zone, but alas, no snakes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/P21039581.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1736\" title=\"Apartment Buildings\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/P21039581.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" srcset=\"https:\/\/asiawheeling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/P21039581.jpg 700w, https:\/\/asiawheeling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/P21039581-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We were enjoying a can of &#8220;100  Plus&#8221;, the local energy drink, when in desperation we asked a local Tamil  truck driver who was refueling and purchasing snack food at a local  convenience store one last time for directions. His response was so  ridiculously hard to interpret, and spiced so heavily with head wobbling and  the phrases &#8220;so simple&#8221; and &#8220;no anyway place&#8221; (which we took to mean one-way road) that we were torn between  bursting into laughter and dutifully heeding his directions. So we  decided to simply do both, and, low and behold, we found ourselves  arriving at the elusive place. \u00a0We gave silent thanks to the Tamil  driver and his wonderfully peculiar way of communication, and in we  went. \u00a0We braced ourselves for the dozens of snakes writhing entranced on the clay floor, and the holy men who would have the no-doubt thankless task of sedating them.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll be honest, the snake temple is nothing to write home  about. \u00a0It seems as though the architects of this experience had read neither <a title=\"One Thousand and One Arabian Nights\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/One_Thousand_and_One_Nights\" rel=\"noopener\">One Thousand and One (Arabian) Nights<\/a> (\u0643\u062a\u0627\u0628 \u0623\u0644\u0641 \u0644\u064a\u0644\u0629 \u0648\u0644\u064a\u0644\u0629\u200e), nor had they considered consulting the temple&#8217;s design with children raised on <a title=\"Chuck Jones\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chuck_Jones\" rel=\"noopener\">Chuck Jones<\/a> cartoons.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1731\" title=\"Last Kiss\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/P2103997.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/asiawheeling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/P2103997.jpg 700w, https:\/\/asiawheeling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/P2103997-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/P2103994.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1730\" title=\"Snake Temple Signs\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/P2103994.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" srcset=\"https:\/\/asiawheeling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/P2103994.jpg 700w, https:\/\/asiawheeling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/P2103994-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But there were some very drugged snakes inside, and plenty of  incense, though not the billows we had expected.
